Hans Weigl and Walter Drix (Herbert Zipper): Das Ende vom Lied (Circa mid-1930s)

After returning to Vienna in June 1933, one of Zipper’s main sources of income from 1933-38 was writing cabaret music for the underground theatre. The music typically carried a political message and was critical of fascism which was on the rise in Europe. To try and protect himself, Zipper wrote under the pseudonym, Walter Drix.

This piece is titled “Das Ende vom Lied” which translates to “The End of the Song.” Hans Weigl, a Austrian-Jewish writer/theatre critic, penned the lyrics and Zipper wrote the music.

This is the cover and first page of “Das Ende vom Lied.”
