“My string quartet “Erlebnisse” (experiences) was composed in 1994 at the instigation of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Art. Instead of the classical form with several movements, I chose that of a free fantasy. It consists of contrasting episodes which, however, are thematically linked — sometimes this is quite evident, sometimes not — and thus create a unified whole. This is not a work of programme music, but rather the expression of feelings engendered by recalling the decisive events of a long, turbulent life.” – Dr. Herbert Zipper
