R.E. Weys and Walter Drix (Herbert Zipper): Wiener Planeten (Circa mid-1930s)

After returning to Vienna in June 1933, one of Zipper’s main sources of income from 1933-38 was writing cabaret music for the underground theatre. The music typically carried a political message and was critical of fascism which was on the rise in Europe. To try and protect himself, Zipper wrote under the pseudonym, Walter Drix.

This piece is titled “Wiener Planeten” which translates to “Vienna Planet.” R.E. Weys, an influential figure in the Viennese underground cabaret scene, wrote the lyrics and Zipper wrote the music.

This is the cover and first page of “Wiener Planeten.”
