Herbert Zipper and Jura Soyfer: Dachau Lied (1938)
The inspiration for “Dachau Lied” came from the words inscribed above the gate of Dachau Concentration Camp, “Arbeit Macht Frei” or “Work Makes Freedom.” While imprisoned in Dachau, Jura Soyfer (a writer, poet and political activist) created the lyrics which were then put to music created by Dr. Zipper. Zipper then taught a few musicians from memory because neither had materials to write the song down. To the delight of the two artists, the song spread throughout the camp. Prisoners could be heard humming and singing it as they worked.
This manuscript is the first time Dr. Zipper put “Dachau Lied” to paper.
